Mark Ewert, math tutor

Clear and patient math tutoring for students on Vancouver's West Side

I'm Mark, a UBC graduate with a combined degree in Mathematics and Computer Science. I spent four years as a teaching assistant for Calculus 1 and 2, and I now tutor high school and first and second-year university students across Vancouver's west side.

Background & experience

I hold a combined Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics and Computer Science from UBC, where I experienced UBC's math courses firsthand, and gained extensive experience through my role as a Teaching Assistant for Calculus 1 and 2. During my time as a TA, I provided tutorials, office hours, and marked assignments for over 100 students, supporting their understanding of complex mathematical concepts. My expertise lies in simplifying challenging topics and providing clear, effective, and encouraging explanations.

My teaching style

Each session is shaped around the student's current course, questions, and goals.

Understand the ideas

I explain difficult concepts clearly and connect them to multiple examples so students understand how and why the methods work.

Practice with guidance

Students work through problems with support, building up their confidence to solve similar problems independently.

Typical session

We review textbook/assignment questions, focus on the most important ideas, and finish with practice or a plan for what to work on next.

Frequently asked questions

Some practical details about bookings and the tutoring sessions.

How do I book a session?

There is no online booking form. Instead, please email me with your grade level or course, the topics you need help with, and your goals. I'll get back to you within one or two days so we can arrange a time and place for your first session.

How often should I book sessions?

In my experience, students tend to see the best results with regular weekly sessions at the same time and place. This way, we can get into a good routine, and make sure to stay on top of the current topics to not fall behind. I would also encourage you to book a "midterm review session" before a large exam if you are interested, to help you feel as prepared as you can be for it!

Where do sessions take place?

Sessions are available online, or in an agreed-upon public location like a library or community center. If you would feel more comfortable having the sessions at your home, please let me know.

What is your availability like?

My preferred times to meet are Mondays - Thursdays, 9:00am - 6:00pm. These are the best times to schedule regular weekly sessions.

Do you offer a free trial or information session?

I don't offer a free trial session, but the first session is half price. This gives us a low-risk opportunity to meet, work through a few practice problems, and see whether my tutoring is a good fit for you. You are always welcome to email me with any questions you have!

What is your cancellation policy?

Please provide at least 24 hours notice when cancelling or rescheduling a session. Contact me as soon as possible if an emergency comes up.

How can I pay?

I accept both cash and e-transfer payments.

Let's get started
